One of Europe's finest art galleries offers an outstanding collection of European art from 1300 to the present day. The gallery is especially rich in European old masters, Victorian and pre-Raphaelite works, and contemporary British art. It also has an award-winning sculpture gallery, featuring works from the 18th and 19th centuries. Seek out, in particular, Simone Martini's Jesus Discovered in the Temple and Salvator Rosa's Landscape with Hermit. Rembrandt is on show, as is an enticing Nymph of the Fountain by Cranach. The work of British artists is strongest here, ranging from Horse Frightened by a Lion by Stubbs to Snowdon from Llan Nantlle by Richard Wilson. Among the pre-Raphaelites are Ford Madox Brown and W. R. Yeames. The French Impressionists represented include Monet, Seurat, and Degas, among others. Modern British paintings include works by Lucian Freud and Stanley Spencer.

A place worth visiting particularly during the course of this year, 2008. The year that North-Western England's once hub of the slave trade metamorphosises into the role of the European Capital of Culture.
